Deletion of a category may mean that the articles and images in it are directly put in its parent category, or that another subdivision of the parent category is made. If they are already members of more suitable categories, it may also mean that they become a member of one category less.
How to use this page
[edit]- Know if the category you are looking at needs deleting (or to be created). If it is a "red link" and has no articles or subcategories, then it is already deleted (more likely, it was never really created in the first place), and does not need to be listed here.
- Read and understand Wikipedia:Categorization before using this page. Nominate categories that violate policies here, or are misspelled, mis-capitalized, redundant/need to be merged, not NPOV, small without potential for growth, or are generally bad ideas. (See also Wikipedia:Naming conventions and Wikipedia:Manual of Style.)
- Please read the Wikipedia:Categorization of people policy if nominating or voting on a people-related category.
- Unless the category to be deleted is non-controversial – vandalism or a duplicate, for example – please do not depopulate the category (remove the tags from articles) before the community has made a decision.
- Add {{cfd}} to the category page for deletion. (If you are recommending that the category be renamed, you may also add a note giving the suggested new name.) This will add a message to it, and also put the page you are nominating into Category:Categories for deletion. It's important to do this to help alert people who are watching or browsing the category.
- Alternately, use the rename template like this: {{cfr|newname}}
- If you are concerned with a stub category, make sure to inform the WikiProject Stub sorting
- Add new deletion candidates under the appropriate day near the top of this page.
- Alternatively, if the category is a candidate for speedy renaming (see Wikipedia:Category renaming), add it to the speedy category at the bottom.
- Make sure you add a colon (:) in the link to the category being listed, like [[:Category:Foo]]. This makes the category link a hard link which can be seen on the page (and avoids putting this page into the category you are nominating).
- Sign any listing or vote you make by typing ~~~~ after your text.
- Link both categories to delete and categories to merge into. Failure to do this will delay consideration of your suggestion.
Special notes
[edit]Some categories may be listed in Category:Categories for deletion but accidently not listed here.

[edit]NEW NOMINATIONS
[edit]Category:Films about Orthodoxy
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Films about Orthodoxy to Category:Films about Christianity
- Nominator's rationale: merge, redundant category layer with only one subcategory. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:10, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
Category:Christian media
[edit]- Propose renaming Category:Christian media to Category:Christian mass media
- Nominator's rationale: To match parents and subcats, despite the short name of lead article Christian media. – Fayenatic London 11:45, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
Category:Religious films by religion
[edit]- Propose renaming Category:Religious films by religion to Category:Films about religions
- Nominator's rationale: This holds subcats of films about religions, not necessarily religious films. It's a subcat of Films about religion by religion, but "Films about religion(s) by religion" sounds clumsy and unnecessarily wordy.
- Note 1: Wikipedia used to have "Christian films" etc, but these were renamed to "Films about…" at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2012 May 11.
- Note 2: Another option is upmerging to Category:Films about religion, but the nominated cat is a useful subcat of Mass media by religion and Films by culture. If upmerged, it should also be merged to Films by culture. – Fayenatic London 11:43, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
- Rename for consistency. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:11, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
Category:Evangelical medias
[edit]- Propose renaming Category:Evangelical medias to Category:Evangelical Christian mass media
- Nominator's rationale: "media" is a already a plural noun. Add "Christian" like some within Evangelicalism. Add "mass" like Mass media by religion. Note: Christian media does not currently have "mass" but follows the name of its main article Christian media. – Fayenatic London 11:27, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
Category:Anna Maria Jopek songs
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: Only one known entry, which is itself a redirect, making this category essentially redundant. Sims2aholic8 (talk) 10:45, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
- Delete per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:12, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
- Delete per nom. Grk1011 (talk) 12:37, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
Category:Critics of Spiritism
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Critics of Spiritism to Category:Critics of Spiritualism
- Nominator's rationale: The two articles Richard Washburn Child and Bartolo Longo only mention Spiritualism, not Spiritism. – Fayenatic London 09:09, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
- Note: sibling small categories of critics created by the same editor have been deleted, see User_talk:DJKinsella#Speedy_deletion_nomination_of_Category:Critics_of_Christadelphianism. – Fayenatic London 12:01, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
- Merge per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:13, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
Category:2001 in Norwegian cinema
[edit]- Propose renaming Category:1996 in Norwegian cinema to Category:1990s Norwegian films
- Propose renaming Category:2001 in Norwegian cinema to Category:2000s Norwegian films
- Propose renaming Category:Norwegian cinema by year to Category:Norwegian films by decade
- Nominator's rationale: This contains films, which are normally categorised by country and decade, e.g. Category:2000s American films. Cinema categories by year are for festivals, awards etc, e.g. Category:2001 in American cinema. Norwegian decade film categories can immediately be populated with sub-cats for Norwegian-language films, since these are almost exclusively Norwegian. – Fayenatic London 08:37, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
- Rename, the categories contain films, not topic articles. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:15, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
Category:Lists of festivals by continent and city
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: merge, redundant category layer, this is the only subcategory of the target. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:56, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
- But this also functions as a subcat of Category:Lists of festivals by continent and Category:Festivals by continent and city. Maybe upmerge the target instead? – Fayenatic London 11:56, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
- I am ok with that as well and tagged the target too. We still need to figure out the targets for that one. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:18, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
Category:Events by region
[edit]- Propose renaming Category:Events by region to Category:Organized events by region
- Nominator's rationale: rename and re-parent, with very few exceptions this is all about organized events. After renaming the category can be moved under Category:Organized events by location. SubCategory:The Holocaust by region should be purged after the rename as these are not organized events. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:28, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
Category:Jewish American state legislators
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: The naming is just a bit confusing on the parent category, because it can be read as American describing the individual or the state. The real problem is in the subcategories, "Jewish American state legislators in Maine", as if some state legislators in Maine might not be American, which seems at least rather unlikely. Those should just be "Jewish state legislators in Maine". Nat Gertler (talk) 00:48, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- If renamed then to Category:Jewish state legislators in the United States. But if the real problem is in the subcategories then those should be nominated. Marcocapelle (talk) 04:03, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- Forgive me, this is a section of Wikipedia I'm not normal to and don't know the proper pattern for mass nominations. (But yes, you're right, United States is better.) -- Nat Gertler (talk) 13:27, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- @NatGertler: You can use the script User:Qwerfjkl/scripts/massXFD to automatically make mass nominations. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:43, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- That seems to require a level of technical expertise and comfort which I do not have. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 16:50, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

- I'm not sure if the proposed names are better. This format follows the same as Category:African-American state legislators in Maine and so on.--User:Namiba 14:17, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, but African-American is needed because alone, "African" suggests, well, not a specific nationality but a range of them that needs correcting with the American; "Jewish" doesn't. We have plenty of categories that start with African-American and then have a place (Start typing "Category:African-American history in" into the search box.) There appear to be no categories that start "Catholic American" and the only one that starts Muslim American is Category:Muslim Americans, and doesn't have another place name (and even then, is a dead category holder, telling you to go look at American Muslims instead.) Looking at categories that start with "Jewish American", we have things like Category:Jewish-American history by city, but if you look at the subcategories there where locations are actually named, the "American" is dropped; they're in the form of "History of the Jews in Natchez, Mississippi". -- Nat Gertler (talk) 14:46, 24 April 2025 (UTC) Adding: Oh, here's a good example: Category:LGBTQ state legislators of the United States, not LGBTQ-American. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 14:51, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- Ok, that makes sense. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:43, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- @NatGertler: do you want me to tag all of the subcategories? Best, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 00:14, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
- If you could, that would be great. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 01:31, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
- Similarly named categories include Asian American and Pacific Islander state legislators, Hispanic and Latino American state legislators and Native American state legislators. What do they come under? Moondragon21 (talk) 07:18, 2 May 2025 (UTC)

Category:Telegram channels of Russia
[edit]- Propose renaming Category:Telegram channels of Russia to Category:Russian Telegram channels
- Nominator's rationale: To correspond with Category:Russian news websites and similar. – GnocchiFan (talk) 16:43, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- But they are not necessarily “Russian.” Channels in this category are related to Russia, but they do not necessarily have to be Russian (also another case of "of Russia": Category:Mass media companies of Russia). --MocnyDuham (talk) 16:47, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
